Survivor Australia Floods |
Types of
floods
There are many different types of floods, they can vary from flash floods to tsunamis.
The main floods that can happen in Australia at any time even if you don't live near a creek or river.
They are
Flash Flooding
A flash flood by definition is a sudden local flood, typically due to heavy rain. A flash flood can happen very quickly at any time and can be very destructive depending on the amount of rainfall. It involves runoff and soil absorption not being able to reduce the water into the ground in time for the amount of water being precipitated. Therefore, the water gathering in large quantities and rushes the town with large bodies of water that usually take many weeks to dissipate.
Storm Surge
This is the process of the sea waters rise due to the elevated action of a low pressure system of the coast. This added with strong shore winds can lead to devastating floods in low areas near the beach or coast.
Dam Failure
Dam flooding is where the dam is over filled and therefore damage is present and the dam may become ruptured or destroyed therefore causing upstream damage by debris and by high water currents. Although dam ruptures are extremely rare as all dams are monitored 24,7.
Tsunamis
A tsunamis is a huge tidal waves that are caused by earthquakes underwater near a major fault line or the edge of a tectonic plate. Tectonic plates are gigantic jigsaw puzzle pieces that cover the earths crust. When two plates underwater collided they may form a tsunamis. Tsunamis are extremely dangerous as they pull the tide back very far then rush the beach with torrential water that can flow very fast and can carry lots of debris at an tremendous force that can destroy a two story building.
